Software I use Coda's Print Music software package to write out my parts for my brass quartet/ensemble. It allows me to hear the parts before I print them out. If I don't like what I wrote down, I can make corrections, hear it again, and print out the part. What I truly like is the option to display a music score in "concert pitch" and toggle back to a "non-concert pitch" display. I can then "extract" the specific part from the master score and save it separate from the main score for each print out of the parts.

Cakewalk Pro Audio 9,  For a new musicians trying to create their first midi project. I recommend using this less expensive package. It has many features of the larger package and does what you need.

Sound Forge 5

The latest version is Sound Forge 8. Sound Forge 8 software is everything you need to analyze, record, and edit audio, produce music loops, digitize and clean-up old recordings, model acoustic environments, create streaming media, and master replication-ready CDs.

and other percussion instruments

Digital Instruments Roland XP-60 - This keyboard is my main board. I use it for gigs and practicing at home my the brass ensemble. What I especially like about the keyboard are the expansion cards you can get for it. I have the Studio Card.

I used to play the Korg O1-W keyboard. I loved it! I'm hoping to one day get the Triton Keyboard below. Take a look at the new Triton keyboard now.

Alesis QS6 - I use this keyboard for my midi projects. I accidentily dropped the Alesis keyboard from about 4 ft high on a hard wood floor. It still works like a charm. Wow!... I try not to do that anymore : ) My keyboard looks like this one. This keyboard was the featured instrument in my Music CD, "Jubilosos Te Adoramos". See track "Cerca Mas Cerca".

Below is the latest model of the QS6. Thinking of buying one. Its not too expensive like the Korgs and Rolands. It is very easy to transport. Take a look at the link below. Click below to check out the new version of this very cool keyboard. It was a great library of very energetic sound pads. It's a great sounding keyboard.
